Researchers ran an experimental "AI and Writing" course with 38 undergraduate students from many majors. Students completed structured assignments, reflected on their process, and tried different AI tools across two semesters.
At first many students expected AI to do the work. Over time they learned that using AI often increases the mental work of writing. Effective prompts need planning and clarity, and students must check AI output for mistakes. After the course, many students became more critical, reflective, and intentional when they used AI to test and improve ideas.
