Reports say LGBTQI+ people in Azerbaijan face discrimination, hate crimes and frequent rights violations. The country has ranked low on ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Map for years. Public debate often rejects queer themes and international queer films are mostly absent from local screens.
In response, a group of short films and documentaries now appears. Some works are by local trans and non-binary authors, graduates of the State University of Culture and Arts, and a few foreign directors. One film, All Monsters Are Human, follows three queer Azerbaijanis and uses interviews and animation to show trauma and memory.
