Codix Bio, a WHO‑licensed factory in Nigeria, began production this month of a large number of rapid diagnostic test kits. About 70 per cent of the manufacturing content comes from local suppliers, while some key inputs are still imported.

The kits need no elaborate laboratory equipment or reliable electricity, so they can be used in remote communities and give quick results for better care. Africa has a high need for testing because many people are affected by HIV, malaria and other diseases.

The company says it will try to make all components in Nigeria within five years and has received training and ISO certification. A partner will help transfer technology for several months.
