The results show that children who value belonging feel content with their relationships. They accept some social invitations to feel included, but they also enjoy their solitude. Because they know that peers will keep inviting them, they do not feel lonely. Knowing they still belong acts as a protective buffer.
In contrast, children who do not care about fitting in often feel unhappy. These students frequently turn down invitations until other children stop asking them. As a result, they feel isolated from the rest of the class.
Researchers suggest that adults should understand these findings. Instead of forcing children into large social situations, parents and teachers can encourage them to join small groups of peers or occasionally accept invitations.
