Wildfires in the United States create severe air pollution that threatens public health, causes economic challenges, and reverses years of environmental progress.

New research found that smoke from Canadian wildfires reduced bird sightings across New York during recent breeding seasons. Scientists matched air pollution data with nearly 99,000 eBird checklists and saw declines for many forest songbirds.
A study of 3.7 million Kaiser Permanente members found that the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires caused large increases in virtual care, especially for respiratory and cardiovascular symptoms, and raised other outpatient visits.
