Kobudo means ancient martial ways and is older than modern sports styles. On February 1 Global Voices attended the 49th Japanese Kobudo Demonstration at the Nippon Budokan, where many schools showed empty-hand and weapon techniques.
The organisers said kobudo is shown in demonstrations rather than competitions because real combat would be too dangerous. About 75 schools belong to the national association and about half take part in the public show; this year 36 schools participated. Schools are trying to attract young people and some have changed dress and practice to appeal to modern students. Many schools also welcome learners from abroad.
