Working overnight is difficult for hospital doctors. A study at the University of Missouri tested a small change in work hours. Emergency doctors moved their night shift from 10 PM to 8 PM, so they finished at 4 AM instead of 6 AM.
This new schedule gave doctors better sleep. They slept during normal dark hours, so their bodies rested better. Tests showed that their health improved, and they felt more energetic during the day.
Doctors also had more daytime hours to spend with family and friends. Because the results were very positive, the department decided to keep the earlier schedule permanently.
