Nations across Latin America and the broader Americas are experiencing a significant resurgence of measles, marking the highest case numbers in over twenty-two years. Public health experts indicate that this outbreak is primarily driven by declining vaccination rates combined with intensive international travel, particularly surrounding major events like the FIFA World Cup.

Between January and August, the region documented more than 51,000 cases—nearly triple the total reported during the entirety of 2025. Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, and Peru account for 95 percent of all registered cases this year. Consequently, the Pan American Health Organization issued a formal advisory, urging member states to bolster vaccination campaigns, enhance epidemiological surveillance, and deploy rapid response measures to mitigate public health risks.

Statistical data indicates that 73 percent of patients had never received a measles vaccine. Regional immunization coverage remains below the critical 95 percent threshold required to achieve herd immunity. Presently, only 85 percent of the population has obtained the two recommended doses of the MMR vaccine.

Public health authorities stress that global mobility significantly accelerates cross-border virus transmission. They advise local governments to investigate the specific local factors contributing to low immunization rates and to close immunity gaps urgently to prevent further outbreaks.
